Five Card Quest - Tactical RPG Battles App Reviews

Beautiful, but Buggy

The art here is stylish and engaging, and the gameplay has potential. I only really had two issues, and the second was a gamekiller for me. First, gameplay evolves very little as you progress. Enemies change, but only from one level to the next, which means every game ends up feeling very similar. Second, the game is SUPER buggy. Enemies freeze. Sometimes they vanish and you cant defeat them (which ends your game). Sometimes your interrupts (particularly for the rogue) suddenly quit working. Some cards NEVER work right (like the mages firestorm spell). Was this tested at all? It feels like someone tried it out, saw how pretty it was, and just patted themselves on the back and called it finished. It definitely isnt.

Needs some work

Could be great but it feels unfinished as is. It seems that often the mechanics are buggy but its hard to tell because none of them are clearly explained or presented. Good idea but needs finishing.

Fun, but gets old quickly

This game is mechanically great. However, there is little reason to keep going. You only have 3/5 characters, they barely improve, gain no new strategies, items are boring, and there are no objectives.

Five Card Quest

I really wanted to give this game five stars, but two things are holding me back. The first is the lag in some of the battles, and second is the confusion about some of the cards you can play. I think a tutorial would definitely be beneficial. I personally like the "simple" look of the game. Fix the lag, and have a tutorial, and this will definitely be a five star game. I know you can make this happen Rocketcat!

A bug fix away from perfect

This is exactly what I look for in a game. Its a careful balance of simple and deep. There arent many actions to take, but theres an exceptionally deep level of synergy to explore. There are a few bugs (a card that isnt supposed to kill the priest kills the priest, random game ending bugs) to work out, but once theyre gone there is 0 reason not to pick this one up.

Close to greatness

If this game were made by anyone besides Rocketcat I would have rated it far worse. However, I am confident they will fix it with time. The gameplay is fun but buggy and confusing. My save appears to have been corrupted somehow and when attempting to load simply makes the screen flash rapidly. In its current state, I cannot truly recommend this game. If patched properly I have high hopes but in its current state it seems rushed.

Pretty good

Not bad for a $3 game. It takes some getting used to and some fights can get annoying but its fun. Worth a shot.

Needs Update ASAP

My game crashed after 2 hours. Now when I hit continue the screen just flashes. I wasted money and time as the game hasnt been updated to fix this bug. Update and I will adjust my review.

Fun and simple, but too buggy

This could easily be a great little game to have on your phone if it werent so buggy.

Great offline strategy RPG for every spare minute

If youre like me and find yourself with just a few minutes here and there to kill and want a game that requires tough choices for rewarding outcomes, I think youll find that Five Card Quest fills those minutes quite nicely! Some might have understandable criticisms of this game, but I have no regrets purchasing it. It scratches an itch Ive been trying to reach for a while for a simple and easy to control (with just one thumb) game that feels different and strategic every time I play and can be picked up and put down easily. I highly recommend it, but just know what youre buying and make sure you have that same itch to scratch. :)

Bugs and lack of polish spoil a good concept

Too buggy to enjoy... game freezes using certain cards, couldnt continue game after reaching a few levels. Needs an update to be usable

Great game with too low ratings :(

Cant believe this game is getting such low ratings. Its absolutely phenomenal but I do suppose its not for everyone. It feels like an unwinnable chess match... But thats just fine with me. Your only form of progress or achievement is surpassing where you previously reached and I love every second of it. Seems as its going to receive Dev support so yet another reason to love it. All in all, it is definitely not for everyone but I without question recommend it to anyone who enjoys this style and type of game.

Buggy

Could be great, but is unacceptably buggy. Hopefully things will get fixed.

Five Card Quest

This game is fantastic - once I played a couple games and got comfortable with the mechanics and animations/attack patterns, the gameplay really opened up. I wanna say its like a card battler, roguelike, RPG-lite type game, but it combines all of these elements so flawlessly that it doesnt come across as a hybrid game. Its just so beautifully done on every spectrum. The game does lag a bit on my iPhone 5 running iOS 7.1.2, but thats kind of to be expected by now with my ancient device and outdated OS... however, when I upgrade, this will be one of the first handfull of titles to get switched over to the new phone. Just like Mage Gauntlet and Wayward Souls, this game will be on my phone until it doesnt work anymore. THANK YOU FOR SUCH AN AMAZINGLY WELL DONE GAME, ROCKETCAT!!!! **update** Thank you for the update! I didnt think you guys could, but the performance enhancements really made the game play a LOT smoother on my phone. The new card menus, battle info and icons letting you know when enemies will hit were all fantastic additions to this already great squad based rogue-like.

Five Star Quest

Challenging tactical gameplay and sharply stylish artwork from the standard bearers at Rocketcat.

Fun, but not alot of variety

1st try: I got to the void 1st page. 2nd try: I beat the game, so relatively easy for me. Not alot of randomization when it comes to the dungeons. Both times played the layout seemed very similar along with what the vendors sell as well. Fighting is very repetitive. The guard is by far the best unit(1v5d with the guard as last alive). If I were to give some tips Id say start with the archer(highest damage dealing class) & guard. Rogue is pretty solid too. Priest is good for final battle. Mage is average. Basically, all you gotta do is take the least amount of dmg possible. Avoiding dmg is more important than dealing dmg. Theres a skull indicator when an enemy is about to strike across. So you try to "interrupt" them or move into a different lane so your guard can tank the hit. The game needs more variation. Perhaps they should add equips for the units and monster loot

No Instructions on How to Play

No first round that guides you through game mechanics. No help menu that explains the game. Tried 3-4 games and thought would pick up intuitively how to play the game. Nope. Useless.

Good

Enjoyed the game, but there are a lot of bugs

Excellent game but could be a little deeper

I love the idea but wish there was character progression that went a little deeper. Perhaps I need to get farther into the game but the same few cars each class has does get a little old. Still, the game is fun, very easy to pick up and the art direction is new and refreshing. Well worth the money.

Great with some must-fix bugs

Love this game, but there are bugs that inconsistently impact state. For example, I increased health at a fountain and used an item going into battle. In battle the fight crashed. I can live with that, but when starting the app after the crash the fountain is used, the item is gone, and my health is at pre-fountain levels. So Im impacted beyond the crash because Im returned to a game state that never existed. Update: three times now the game permanently hangs on the first screen to continue a saved game. When I tap continue the screen almost fades out and I can see the big "V" flickering. Killing the app doesnt help. I have to start over to play. Dropping from 4 to 2 stars.
